Off-Grid Chalets Near Montreal and Ottawa
What to Know Before You Book Kenauk Nature
Imagine waking up to loon calls, not notifications. That’s the deal when you book an off-grid chalet at Kenauk Nature — 65,000 acres of protected wilderness tucked between Montreal and Ottawa, just 90 minutes from either city.
But before you pack, there’s something important to understand about how our chalets work. Most of them run off-grid. That’s by design — and it’s a big part of what makes a stay here feel different from anywhere else.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Our Conservation Mission
Kenauk Nature isn’t a resort dressed up as a nature reserve. It’s a private conservation territory in Montebello, in the heart of the Outaouais, protected for nearly four centuries. The lakes are pristine. The forests are old. The wildlife is wild.
When you rent a chalet here, you’re not just booking a getaway near Montreal or Ottawa. You’re contributing to a unique conservation project that keeps this land protected. Every night you spend on the reserve helps keep it wild for the next generation. That’s a different kind of vacation.
What Off-Grid Actually Means at Kenauk
Our chalets sit deep in the forest, often on their own private lake. There are no power lines out there. No municipal water. No streetlights. The chalets are powered by solar panels and propane generators.
Propane handles the heavy lifting: fridges, stoves, hot water, and heating. Solar takes care of the rest. The system is quiet, clean, and reliable – but it’s not the same as plugging into the grid at home.
Here’s what comes standard in every Kenauk chalet:
- Fully equipped kitchen (propane fridge, stove, cookware, dishes)
- Hot running water and a proper bathroom
- Wood stove or propane heating
- BBQ on the deck
- Rowboat(s), canoe, and kayak at your dock
- Bed linens and towels (not for glamping units — check your specific listing )
What you bring: food, drinks, and the willingness to slow down.
What to Know Before You Book
Off-grid living comes with a few real-world details that matter when you’re choosing the right chalet for your trip. Read these carefully.
Power outlets depend on the chalet category.
Our Deluxe chalets have power outlets where you can charge phones, cameras, and small devices like you would at home. Our Classic and Heritage chalets do not have power outlets. Bring power banks if you need to keep a phone charged. Many guests find this part of the appeal, but it’s good to know going in.
Cell service is limited and varies by chalet.
Some of our chalets have partial or limited cell reception. If a chalet has any cell service at all, you’ll see it mentioned directly in the chalet’s description on our website.
Satellite internet is available at some chalets.
A handful of our chalets can be set up with satellite internet on request. If that option is available for a particular chalet, it’ll be noted in the description. If you need to stay connected for work, look for that mention — or ask our team to help you find the right fit.
Pick the Right Chalet for Your Trip
Choosing your chalet is mostly about deciding how unplugged you want to be. Travelling with kids who need a tablet charged? Look at Deluxe. Want a true digital reset on a remote lake? Heritage or Classic will deliver. Working remotely for part of the week? Filter for satellite internet.
